Thought I’d share this again…

As an author …

I wish I could tell you I know all there is. I don’t.

Truth is, when i first started writing I barely saw a return on the investment I put in. Hours upon hours of writing but no money was being made. Time spent away from family and friends and even some of them will not support. My name printed real cute on the front cover of books and you can find me on Amazon but that’s about it.

I should quit, right? I BET NOT and neither should you.

Here’s some unsolicited advice.

1. Invest in yourself and your gifts. The same way you go to school for a degree or certification; study your craft. Spend money on the best book cover, editors, proofreaders and promoters. Cheap is not always the way to go. Trust me, I know.

2. Build you a team. People who will push you, encourage you and pray for you. Have someone on your side who will tell you the truth, even if it hurts your feelings. Get to know people who are on the level you’re trying to make it too and one day surpass. Ask their opinion and take their advice.

3. Do NOT write book series if you don’t have the time to finish it. You will lose readers that way. If I have to re-read the first book just to read the second one, issa no for me.

4. Believe in yourself. There will be some folk who will not like what you put out and you may get some bad reviews. Trust your gift. Family may not support. Trust your gift. Nobody showing up at your celebration, trust your gift. It will pay off.

5. NEVER GIVE UP. I told you, for years the royalties I received couldn’t even pay my water bill (the cheapest bill in the house) but I did not quit. Don’t misunderstand me, I am not in a position to quit my jobs but I am finally seeing a return on the investment I’ve been putting in. IT TOOK YEARS though! You will see it too.

6. Stop comparing yourself to someone else. You are you and they are them. I don’t care how many of their books you read, you will not write like them. It’s their gift the same as it is your. Find your own footing. Sure, I said before, take advice but don’t copy them because that will only make you a copy of them and not you.

That’s it for now.

I don’t know it all. I haven’t made the New York Times’ Best Seller. My books are not in Barnes and Noble or Walmart stores. My name is not rolling in the credits of movies. I am not being called on to headline book events. Fact is, I’m Lakisha … Author Lakisha and people know me and they read my books.

WRITING IS NOT FOR WIMPS

WRITING IS NOT FOR WIMPS

I’ve penned this particular topic, a couple of times before and I thought I’d share it again.

WRITING IS NOT FOR WIMPS

Writing is for those who trust and believe in the process and timing of it all. See, writing takes hard work, patience, determination, passion, money AND courage. No, it doesn’t take some of these, it takes all of these.

I’ll tell you why …

1. Hard work – if you think writing is as easy as pulling out a computer or a notepad, think again. You have to come up with a story that makes sense, flows and is grammatically correct while sacrificing time you want to hang out, sleep, vacation and everything else. You NEVER give up!

2. Patience – it takes patience to build a following, to get people to believe in you, to make it to bestseller, to sell books and to see a return on your investment. You NEVER give up!

3. Determination – Who will work harder for you than you! (sing with me … nobody!) You have to be determined to make it even when the royalty checks aren’t enough to cover gas. You have to be determined, even when it’s been months and no reviews. You have to be determined to keep writing even when your first book is still ranked at 1,254.144 on Amazon. Which means … you NEVER give up!

4. Passion – Writing can/is be a career but it works better when it’s a passion, something you believe in. How do you know if it’s your passion? Your passion is something that you’ll willingly lose sleep over and something you will not give up on, especially when it gets hard. You NEVER give up!

5. Money – Here’s one that you might cringe at but you have to spend money to make money. From book covers, editing, promotion, ads, newsletters, gifts, etc. because Jezzy, the rapper said, “Scared money don’t make money.” Sometimes you have to take a risk, even if it fails, the first time. You NEVER give up!

6. Courage – You absolutely have to have courage. Why? Because you will have strangers reading your work and some will not like it. You’ll have folk combing through every word and scene with a fine tooth comb, leaving “constructive criticism” on a word you misspelled or a comma you didn’t place. Mane, you’ll have folk mad because your fiction story doesn’t seem real.  Writing takes thick skin but here’s the blessing … for the few who don’t like it, hundreds will. You NEVER give up!

Therefore, let me leave you with this piece of advice, don’t allow anyone to detour your dreams. It’s your story, tell it. Sure, writing isn’t for wimps but it’s worth it! Just NEVER give up!

— Keep writing 🧡

Writing didn’t find me!

Being a author, whether through a publishing company or being self published, takes hard work. Why? imageBecause writing isn’t for wimps! Nawl! But it’s not just the writing because them comes the hustle and flow! See, what’s the sense of spending all of your extra time writing to simply allow your work to sit idle. You have to grind extra hard being a new author just to get your name out there. Then you have to keep up the hustle and the grind to keep your name out!

Yea, you’ll have a few bad reviews but your work won’t please everybody, all the time, so keep grinding. Yea, you’ll have folk, even some family and close friends that won’t support you but even Jesus knew this for He said in Mark 6:4, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.” Yet don’t stop the hustle.

I pray daily for God to kill more and more of my flesh so that I can be spiritually better than yesterday. This doesn’t mean in order for me to stop writing fiction books (unless God says it) but so that even they will be anointed!

I told you that writing didn’t find me; it was etched in my soul even before my daddy’s sperm met my mother’s egg! How do I know? God told me. He said He knew me before I was formed which makes my writing (whatever genre) ordained! It is my prayer that the mark I leave on your life is a good one. I pray that when you look at me, you see God. I pray that God will use me abundantly to save folk. And I pray that He allows my gifts to take me places I’ve only dreamed of.

It’ll happen … In God’s time! Don’t give up, hold on! (that’s for somebody) #transparentSaint

Writing isn’t for Wimps!

Whew! You read this right, “Writing isn’t for wimps.” See, it takes time to write anything from a blog post to most definitely a book so it isn’t for the faint at heart. Writing takes determination because you have to be determined to get your name out. Writing takes hard work because who will be able to sell your book better than you? Oh, a publicist can but if you’re like me, you’re not a millionaire; hell you’re not even a thousandaire so the publicist is you which means, writing is hard work. Writing takes patience because not everyone will like your book simply because you think they will so you have to be patient in getting a publishing company to pick it up. Writing takes courage because you will have strangers picking it up or downloading what you’ve put your hard work into and there are some avid readers who will comb through every word and scene with a fine tooth comb. Writing, also, takes thick skin because again, not everyone will like your book but for the few who don’t, hundreds will.

But let me leave you with this piece of advice, don’t allow anyone to detour your dreams. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how pretty you look, how you dress and even who your folks are that can determine who you are. God made you exactly who YOU are, so go for whatever it is you’re passionate about. Writing for me is a passion and its one gift that God saw fit for me to be blessed with so I use it every day to ensure that it glorifies Him. Yea, it’s hard being an author but it’s even harder becoming a published author with a book no one reads. Writing isn’t for wimps because after the book has been written, edited and made available for purchase; the real work begins. You are your best advocate. Make damn sure everyone knows!
