Daily Devotional – 8/16/13 “Choose to be happy!”

Father Murphy walks into a pub in Donegal, and says to the first man he meets, “Do you want to go to heaven?” The man said, “I do Father.”

The priest said “Then stand over there against the wall.” Then the priest asked the second man, “Do you want to go to heaven?”

“Certainly, Father,” was the man’s reply.

“Then stand over there against the wall,” said the priest. Then Father Murphy walked up to O’Toole and said, “Do you want to go to heaven?”

O’Toole said, “No, I don’t Father.”

The priest said, “I don’t believe this. You mean to tell me that when you die you don’t want to go to heaven?”

O’Toole said, “Oh, when I die, yes. I thought you were getting a group together to go right now.”

Laughter is good for you, you know? Well, at least this is what my bible says in Proverbs 17:22, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.” See, laughter flows through your body like medicine does from an IV; it soothes those places that have hurt abiding in them and it mends the broken places and makes them like new. Yea, I know that it seems like God isn’t hearing your prayers, your tears never seem to stop, your pacing is never over and sleep just won’t come but Job 8:20-21 says, “But look, God will not reject a person of integrity, nor will he lend a hand to the wicked. He will once again fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy,” but you have to trust and believe that He will. It may look like you will never be happy again after your husband or wife left but you will, if you choose to be. It may look like you’ll never get your head above water after the bills have sucked you under but you will, if you stand up. It may even look like there is nothing to laugh about but there is because things could be worse. See, God hasn’t left you, He’ll never forsake you and you aren’t being punished because you have to do a few more chemo treatments, take insulin for your diabetes, medicine for your high blood pressure, dialysis for your kidneys, pills for migraines, shots for arthritis or even pills to help you sleep; that’s just the test you have to go through in order to write your testimony. Stop waiting for folks to make you happy because happiness comes from within. Don’t believe me? Then read Proverbs 15:13 which says, “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” Stop giving your heart to folks who will make it unhappy. No, folks can’t take your heart or your happiness because they are both on the inside of you which means you have to give it to them, so stop giving it away and then acting like the world owes it back. The bible says in Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart,” which means; if you put your all in God, He’ll give you all your heart desires.

Laugh a little more today, smile a little bit more tomorrow, relax and let the worry go! Take your happiness back and you’ll be glad you did. Yes, God promised that we would have trouble but He didn’t say all the days would. Why do you think the bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:12-13, “So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can and people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God?” You should be happy because you deserve to be happy! Stop allowing the world to make you bitter and mean. You are the only person who can give your happiness away. Take it back right now and enjoy it!
